Halogen light bulbs remain a trusted and versatile lighting choice, offering bright, crisp light with excellent colour rendering and improved energy efficiency over traditional incandescent bulbs. A halogen bulb works by using a tungsten filament encased in a halogen gas capsule, allowing it to produce a brighter output, longer lifespan, and consistent performance. At Lightshopdirect, we stock a wide range of halogen light bulbs to suit every application, from household lighting to commercial and outdoor use.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Halogen light bulbs use a halogen gas to increase lifespan and brightness, producing a whiter, crisper light than traditional incandescent bulbs. They are also more energy-efficient, delivering higher performance while consuming less power.
Most halogen bulbs are compatible with standard household light fittings, including ceiling lights, wall lights, and lamps. Always check the wattage, voltage, and bulb cap type (such as GU10, G9, E14, or E27) to ensure the correct fit and safe operation.
Yes, almost all halogen bulbs are fully dimmable, making them ideal for creating adjustable lighting levels in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms. Pair them with compatible dimmer switches for the best results.
Halogen bulbs typically last between 2,000 and 4,000 hours, offering a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs. Their bright, consistent output makes them perfect for accent lighting, spotlights, and general household use.
Yes, halogen bulbs are around 20–30% more energy-efficient than incandescent lamps. While they use more energy than LED bulbs, they remain a cost-effective choice for those wanting bright, natural light at a lower upfront cost.
Halogen bulbs are safe when used correctly. They operate at high temperatures, so avoid direct contact with the glass and ensure fixtures have adequate ventilation. Always switch off the power before changing a bulb.
Yes, LED bulbs are the most common replacement for halogen bulbs. When switching, match the base type, voltage, and size (e.g., GU10, MR16, or G9) to ensure full compatibility and energy savings.

    About Halogen Light Bulbs

Some of the halogen lines here are ending. Manufacturers can no longer supply several of the low voltage types, so what is in stock is what remains: MR16 and MR11 12V spotlights, G4 and GY6.35 capsules, and the general purpose G9. Once they are gone they will not be replaced. The heat resistant G9 oven lamps are the exception and continue, because no LED yet survives the temperature inside an oven cavity.

If you are replacing like for like while you still can, order what you need now. If you would rather move the fitting to LED and stop worrying about it, the section below gives the direct swap for every cap on this page.

The LED replacement for each halogen cap

Every halogen fitting on this page has an LED equivalent that fits the same holder.

Three things to check before you swap

Colour temperature is the one people notice. 2700K is closest to the warm light a halogen gives, and 4000K or above will look noticeably colder in the same fitting. If the fitting is 12V and runs through a transformer, check its minimum load, because a 20W halogen replaced by a 4W LED can fall under it and flicker or fail to strike; a dedicated LED driver solves it. And a dimmer built for a halogen load usually has to be swapped for an LED rated one, whatever the bulb packaging claims.

Where each cap is normally used

G9 in wall lights, bathroom fittings and cooker hoods. MR16 and MR11 in 12V downlights and display lighting. GU10 at mains voltage in ceiling spots. G4 and GY6.35 in under cabinet and cabinet lighting. R7s linear in floodlights, security lights and uplighters, in 78mm and 118mm lengths that are not interchangeable. AR111 in retail and gallery display. If you are unsure which you have, the cap is stamped on the base or printed on the old lamp.
