About Tubular Heaters

A tubular heater is a low wattage heater in a long sealed tube, built to hold a space a few degrees above the outside temperature rather than to make a room comfortable to sit in. That is what stops damp, condensation and frost in greenhouses, garages, workshops and sheds.

The deXpro and TCP range runs 45W at 1ft to 180W at 4ft, in standard IP55 and thermostatic IP44 versions, with matching guards that keep hands, pets and foliage off the hot surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Very little by heater standards. At around 27p per kWh, an 80W tube running continuously for 24 hours costs about 52p. A thermostatic model costs less again, because it only draws power when the temperature falls below the setting.
For their intended job, yes, and there is little that does it better for the money. For heating a room to a comfortable temperature, no. Judged as a room heater they will always disappoint, because that is not what they are designed to do.
Not to a comfortable living temperature. A tubular heater lifts a space a few degrees above ambient. For a room you intend to sit in, a panel heater or downflow fan heater sized to the space is the right product.
Yes, they are designed for continuous operation and that is how most are used through winter. A thermostatic model is the better choice for this, since it cycles rather than running constantly, and a guard is sensible anywhere the tube can be touched.
Wattage rises with length, so choosing a size is really choosing an output. The range runs 45W at 1ft to 180W at 4ft. As a guide, 45W to 60W suits a small greenhouse or a cupboard, 80W to 120W a single garage or workshop, and 135W to 180W a larger or poorly sealed space.
For a small domestic greenhouse, 45W to 80W is usually enough for frost protection. Larger or older glasshouses with gaps benefit from two smaller heaters spaced along the length rather than one at one end.
A standard tubular heater runs whenever it is switched on. A thermostatic model holds a set temperature and cycles, which is what most people want for frost protection, because it only draws power when the temperature actually drops. If you are running one all winter, the thermostatic version pays for itself.
That is one of the most common uses. Fit a thermostatic model near the pipework, set it just above freezing, and it will only draw power when the temperature approaches the setting.
Greenhouses, garages, workshops, sheds, utility rooms, boot rooms and loft spaces with pipework. Anywhere the goal is protection rather than comfort: keeping seedlings alive, stopping pipes freezing, keeping tools and stored goods dry, and preventing the musty smell that comes with still damp air.
Standard models are IP55, protected against dust and water jets from any direction, which covers most greenhouse and garage installations. Thermostatic models are IP44. Check the rating against the space rather than assuming.
Anywhere children, pets or stored items can reach the tube, yes. In a greenhouse a guard also keeps foliage off the hot surface. Guards are sized to match the heater length.
