An electric hand dryer uses a stream of high velocity air to evaporate moisture from the hands, replacing paper towels in a washroom. That removes the recurring cost of consumables, the storage space they need, and the waste bin that goes with them.
In most washrooms, yes, once the recurring cost of paper, the storage space and the waste collection are counted. The payback period shortens the busier the washroom is. For a washroom used only a handful of times a day, paper may still be cheaper.
Around 10 to 15 seconds on a high speed model, against thirty seconds or more on a standard warm air dryer. The difference is most noticeable when several people use the washroom at once.
Sensor operated models need no contact, which removes the touch point that a push button or a towel dispenser handle creates. They draw power only while running. A 1.5kW dryer running for twelve seconds uses about 0.005 kWh, which at around 27p per kWh is a fraction of a penny per use. A thousand uses a month costs roughly one pound thirty five.
Speed and throughput. A high speed dryer moves a greater volume of air and finishes in around ten to fifteen seconds, which matters when there is a queue: a pub at closing, an office at lunchtime, a school between lessons.
Match the choice to how busy the washroom actually gets. High speed for queues and heavy footfall. Standard for quieter washrooms, where the lower purchase price and quieter running are worth more than the seconds saved.
Between 1kW and 1.8kW covers most commercial washrooms. Higher output dries faster but draws more current, so check the existing circuit can take it before specifying several units in one room.
White and painted finishes are lighter, cheaper and fine for offices and supervised washrooms. Brushed and black stainless steel resist knocks, scratches and deliberate abuse, which is why they are the usual choice for pubs, schools, sports clubs and unsupervised public washrooms.

No. Hand dryers are hard wired rather than plugged in, and any installation in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Use a qualified electrician.
Around 1.2m to the base for adults, lower for primary schools, and a suitable height for wheelchair users where the washroom is accessible. Check current guidance for public buildings before fitting.
