A panel heater is an electric heater that warms a room by convection, drawing cool air in at the bottom and releasing warm air at the top. It needs no plumbing, which makes it the usual answer for rooms the central heating does not reach: conservatories, loft conversions, garden rooms and extensions.
Allow roughly 100W per square metre for a well insulated room with a standard ceiling height, and more for a conservatory or a room with large glazing. A 12 square metre bedroom is served by around 1.2kW. Undersizing is the common mistake: a heater that never reaches temperature runs constantly and costs more than a correctly sized one that cycles.

Wall mounted is the tidier installation and keeps the floor clear, which matters in a small room. Freestanding models with feet can be moved between rooms as the seasons change. Many units are supplied with both brackets and feet, so the decision is not permanent.
Oil filled panels hold heat after switching off and give a gentler, longer warmth. Dry element panels heat up and cool down faster, which suits a room used in short bursts. Neither is better in general: it depends on whether you want warmth to persist or to arrive quickly.
Running cost is kW multiplied by hours multiplied by your unit rate. A 1.5kW heater running two hours a day at around 27p per kWh is about 81p a day. All panel heaters sold in the UK must meet EcoDesign requirements, which means they carry room temperature control rather than a bare on and off switch, and that control is the single biggest factor in the bill.
For heating a specific room, yes. They are efficient at the point of use, since all the electricity drawn becomes heat in that room, and they avoid the losses of pumping hot water across a house. They are a poor choice as a whole house heating system, because electricity costs more per unit than gas.
They use exactly their rated power while the element is on. The number that matters is how often the thermostat lets it run. A correctly sized 1.5kW heater with a working thermostat in an insulated room may only draw power for a third of the time it is switched on.
All electric heaters are close to 100 per cent efficient at converting electricity to heat, so efficiency claims between models are mostly marketing. What actually changes your bill is thermostatic control, correct sizing, and a timer that stops the heater running in an empty room.
The best one is the one sized to the room. Work out the wattage first using roughly 100W per square metre, then choose between oil filled and dry element by how you use the room, then decide whether smart Wi-Fi control earns its extra cost.
Most panel heaters with thermal cut outs and overheat protection are safe for extended or overnight use. Always follow the manufacturer safety guidelines and choose models that comply with UK safety standards.
Most slimline panel heaters include wall mounting brackets, or can stand on optional feet. Freestanding plug in models need no electrician. Hard wired wall mounted units should be fitted by a qualified electrician, and any installation in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations.
Panel heaters are low maintenance. Dusting the vents and checking for wear keeps them running at their best. Unlike gas heaters they require no annual servicing.
